I think it's important for us as people who are making movies to acknowledge that. I think there's always that fear that a sequel isn't going to live up to the first. You've connected the two films, and how much more am I in this movie? 'Cause I need to be in it more. How are you going to make it better than that?' And when she read the opening, she said, OK, I see what you're doing now. Like, 'Why would you make another one? The first one was so good. But her fear was, I think to be honest, the same one a lot of audience members have. She read that first scene and she said it quelled all her fears. Emily was initially hesitant to sign-on to the second film. Then all of a sudden, your imagination goes crazy. And it's because you haven't been listening for it. The second thing is, when sound goes away, then all of a sudden you start hearing that weird little sound that's being made from your basement or something, and the trees rattles. That's what's so terrifying about it.Д®verybody, I think, has in their imagination that when it goes to quiet, something feels unnerving immediately. I think that in the absence of sound, we start hearing more sounds. Why do you think quiet freaks us out so much?

Once I realized that was happening, organically, the movie can become bigger and scarier because it's all about the characters. And so when they get to the end of that path, it's both literal and metaphorical every single step, now, could be their last. It was intentional that once the family leaves this ecosystem of trust and safety, they now have to go out into the world not knowing what their next step is going to lead them to.
